Earthy kitchen design has been a style on the rise this year. I think it’s a continuation of the Scandi-Japandi-Biophilic-Organic Modern styles we’ve seen evolving over recent years. It’s a definite shift away from those ultra-minimalist, clean and sterile-feeling uber-modern kitchens.

So, I thought I’d explain a little bit about earthy kitchen design and explore how to integrate its features and design principles to infuse your kitchen with the tranquil beauty of the natural world.

What is earthy kitchen design?

Earthy kitchen design is a style that draws inspiration from nature, emphasizing warm, organic materials, natural textures, and earthy tones. It creates a cosy, inviting, grounded atmosphere reflecting the natural world. 🍂

Natural Light

Maximizing natural light is a critical element in earthy kitchen design. It not only brightens the space but enhances the connection with the outdoors.

• Large Windows: Floor-to-ceiling windows or expansive glass panes open the kitchen to the outside world, offering views of nature and letting in fresh air. Windows framed in natural wood or black metal keep the design grounded.
• Skylights: Skylights introduce overhead lights, which are especially useful in kitchens that may not have wall space for larger windows. They bring sunlight deep into the room, making the natural materials glow.
  
  

Organic Shapes and Textures

Organic forms play a significant role in earthy kitchen design. Unlike modern kitchens, which often feature straight, sharp lines, an earthy kitchen incorporates softer, more natural shapes.

You could really go for the wow factor and add some larger plants, such as potted trees or hanging vines, which can create a dramatic effect.

Accessories can also be used to help enhance the natural, grounded feel while adding personal touches. For example:

To stop the room from feeling too dark, it’s all been contrasted with lighter natural stone flooring and a lovely big skylight to help flood the room with natural light. The wooden open shelving introduces yet more texture and ways to display and add earthenware for added colour and texture.
